Many Third-person shooters have come out in the past years. Some like the Metal Gear Solid series have been very popular, too. But when it comes to graphics and the story, there is no parallel in my eyes, to GUN.
Developed by Neversoft, it was released for Xbox, Xbox 360, Playstation 2 and Microsoft Windows.
Set in the Old West, the game features an extraordinary marksman, Colton White. Following a fiction story, involving the antagonist Magruder’s search for a city of gold, White fights his way through tough fights and betrayals with a thirst of vengeance for his murdered father. After he determines Magruder as the man responsible for the killing of his father, he pursues him and finally gets past his guard at the same moment, Magruder finds the city of gold, which is present inside a mountain, after years of wait. In a fight there, White kills Magruder as the mountain collapses around them. However, White manages to escape it.
The visuals of the game are second to none. Combining lush green pastures with barren mountainous lands, the landscape is quite diverse. The player may find grazing horses, sheep and cows in the green lands. The player is free to roam the world when not attempting a mission.
Horses are used for transportation. They come in handy during a fight, too.
The game also features a large array of weapons. In addition to short-range pistols, medium-range rifles and long-range sharpshooters are also present. Shotguns can also be used to rip opponents to shreds in close combat. The player also carries a knife, and later in the game, a sword as a melee weapon is the opponent gets too close. Dynamites and TNT are also available in the arsenal as throwing weapons. Bows can be used for killing from a safe range silently which is very important in some missions.
In addition to the main story, the game also contains some interesting side-missions. Player can become a Law enforcer, catching people doing illegal activities, Bounty hunter, Rancher and can even play Poker missions. The side-missions help to increase your stats for the main story and earn cash. The cash is spent on buying upgrades like Speed Loader and Barrel Chokes etc to improve the equipment for tougher missions ahead.
The game was a critically acclaimed one and garnered favorable reviews from most of the critics. It was well-received by the fans, too. 225,000 units were sold worldwide.
GUN is a thoroughly enjoyable game and has been real fun for me to play.
